Modern Foreign Languages

At Weston Point Primary Academy, our ambition is for children to develop the confidence and enthusiasm to communicate in another language. Spanish is taught throughout Key Stage 2, giving pupils an important opportunity to broaden their understanding of language and culture while developing the foundations needed for successful language learning at secondary school. We want pupils to view learning another language as something enjoyable, achievable and valuable.

We use Kapow Primary Spanish to provide a structured and progressive curriculum which develops pupils' listening, speaking, reading and writing. Children build an increasingly secure bank of vocabulary while also developing their understanding of pronunciation, grammar and sentence construction. Previously learned language is regularly revisited so that pupils can retrieve and apply their knowledge with increasing independence rather than simply memorising vocabulary for individual topics.

Language learning also provides an important opportunity for pupils to learn about cultures and communities beyond their own. At Weston Point, we encourage children to communicate without being afraid of making mistakes, developing confidence, resilience and curiosity along the way. Lessons are supported through modelling, repetition, visuals and opportunities for spoken rehearsal so that all pupils can participate. By the end of Year 6, we want our pupils to approach language learning positively and to enter secondary school with strong foundations upon which they can build.
