History

At Weston Point Primary Academy, we believe that a high-quality History curriculum helps children understand both the world in which they live and the events, people and ideas that have shaped it. Our ambition is for pupils to develop a secure chronological understanding, a rich body of historical knowledge and the ability to think critically about the past. Children learn to ask questions, examine evidence, consider different interpretations and understand that accounts of history can be constructed from a range of sources.

We use Kapow Primary to provide a coherent and progressive History curriculum. Learning is carefully sequenced so that important knowledge, vocabulary and historical concepts are revisited and developed over time. Pupils explore British, local and world history and develop their understanding of concepts such as change, continuity, cause, consequence, similarity, difference and significance. This enables children not only to know more about the past, but also to increasingly think and reason like historians.

Our History curriculum reflects our ambition for pupils at Weston Point to understand their place within a much wider story. We want children to encounter a broad range of people, societies, cultures and experiences and to appreciate that history has been shaped by many different voices. Teaching is adapted so that all pupils can access ambitious historical content, with vocabulary, visual resources, modelling and discussion used to support understanding. By the end of Year 6, our aim is for pupils to be knowledgeable, questioning and thoughtful historians who are ready to build upon strong foundations at secondary school.
