Geography

At Weston Point Primary Academy, our Geography curriculum is designed to develop knowledgeable, curious and responsible young geographers. We want pupils to understand the world around them, beginning with their own locality and progressively broadening their horizons to explore the United Kingdom and the wider world. Geography allows our children to investigate places, people, environments and processes while developing an understanding of how human and physical geography interact.

We use Kapow Primary to support a carefully sequenced Geography curriculum which develops locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography and geographical skills and fieldwork. Knowledge and vocabulary are progressively developed, with pupils regularly revisiting key ideas in greater depth. Children learn to use maps, atlases, globes, digital mapping, data and fieldwork to investigate geographical questions and communicate their findings.

At Weston Point, we believe it is important that children understand both their immediate surroundings and the diversity of the world beyond them. Learning about Weston Point, Runcorn and the wider North West provides an important starting point which is then connected to national and global contexts. Our ambition is for children to appreciate different places and communities, understand environmental challenges and recognise their own responsibilities as global citizens. Through an inclusive and ambitious curriculum, we aim to ensure every pupil leaves Weston Point able to think, question and communicate like a geographer.
