Design and Technology

At Weston Point Primary Academy, Design and Technology challenges pupils to use their creativity, knowledge and problem-solving skills to respond to real purposes and needs. Our ambition is for children to become imaginative and resourceful designers who can identify problems, develop ideas, create products and evaluate how successfully their designs meet their intended purpose.

We use Kapow Primary Design and Technology to provide a progressive curriculum built around the processes of designing, making and evaluating. Pupils develop their technical knowledge and practical skills through increasingly challenging projects and learn to work with a range of materials, structures, mechanisms and systems. The curriculum also develops children's understanding of food and nutrition and provides opportunities to apply learning from subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Computing and Art.

At Weston Point, we want pupils to understand that successful designs rarely happen first time. Testing, evaluating, adapting and improving are therefore important elements of our curriculum and closely reflect our school value of Perseverance. Pupils are encouraged to solve problems independently and collaboratively while considering the needs of the people who might use their products. Through an ambitious and inclusive curriculum, we want every pupil to experience the satisfaction of turning an idea into a finished product and to recognise the role that designers, engineers and innovators play in shaping the world around us.
