Art and Design

At Weston Point Primary Academy, our Art and Design curriculum provides every child with opportunities to explore ideas, develop creativity and express themselves visually. Our ambition is for pupils to become confident artists who are willing to experiment, take creative risks and develop their own responses rather than simply reproduce the work of others. Through Art, children learn that creativity is a process which involves exploration, practice, reflection and refinement.

We use Kapow Primary Art and Design to support a broad and progressive curriculum. Pupils develop their skills across a range of media and techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture, craft and other forms of artistic expression. Children explore the work of artists, designers and craftspeople from different periods, cultures and backgrounds and use this knowledge to inspire and inform their own work. Knowledge, skills and artistic vocabulary are revisited over time, allowing pupils to develop increasing control, independence and sophistication.

At Weston Point, we value children's individual creativity and recognise that successful Art can look different for every pupil. Sketchbooks and practical exploration provide opportunities to generate ideas, practise techniques, make choices and evaluate work. Teachers provide appropriate modelling and scaffolding while allowing pupils increasing creative independence. We want every child to leave Weston Point believing that they can be creative and having developed the knowledge, skills and confidence to engage with art both in their future education and in the wider world.
